Auto LOD?

I come from UE4 and I am trying Cryengine because it is amazing to have so many features builtin like time of day, coastline, etc.
But there are so many questions.

When I doubleclick on an imported (fbx-)mesh, an editor is opened.
As I understand, it is the import-settings.
There is a property called auto generate LODs. When I am changing anything, there is a recompile happening, but the model and polycount seems unchanged.
How does it work? Is there a tutorial for it?
