Achieving blurred shadow maps from point lights?

I have a question regarding point lights and getting softer shadows from them. I see in the documentation that there is a cvar called r_shadowblur. In the sdk this is not a recognized command it seems. As far as I can tell the variable enables screen space blurring of shadow maps, is there something else I need to do to use this cvar, or other wise achieve blurred shadows from lights placed in the scene? Playing with the r_ShadowJittering cvar seems to only have an effect on the shadow maps produced by the sun. I have attached an image of the scene I am modeling and the shadows I wish to blur further:
