Materials and Textures in CE


Very simple question.
Generally speaking, taking into consideration the majority of 3D software (like Maya, Lightwave, Blender) the concept of material and textures are something somewhat different from CE.
Meaning, in other 3D software an object mesh could be shaded by a simple or complex material without the need of using UV textures/maps.

For what I noticed, CE does not deal in these terms.
The object/mesh imported or created must have an UV map applied to it, for the material to work correctly.
Am I interpreting/assuming this thumb rule correctly?
