Hello. Overdraw is a problem in Unreal Engine.
Overdraw is a result of shading the same pixel multiple times. Avoiding transparency helps very much alleivate this problem but not in it's entirety.

Is there a workaround for this in Cry Engine?

This plugin limits render distance dependend on camera view.

the vegetation is pretty much heavy in every engine, also here, but you can set up an "aggressive" LOD and use the view ratio distance for the rendering wich is very useful and is integrated in the engine , also you can use layers and visarea with portal that are great
