Watervolume Shader Artifacts

While experimenting with the Watervolume shader, I noticed some artifacts which you can see in the screenshot. I've adjusted the settings so that the artifacts are worse than usual, but I still see them with almost every setting, to varying degree.

What leads to these artifacts and what I can do to mitigate them?

One thing I do know is that they only occur when the Material's Vertex Wave Scale property is >0. As soon as I set Vertex Wave Scale, even to a value as small as 0.001, I can see artifacts and they increase in size as I increase the value.
