Icons can be displayed as a Particle (sprite perhaps set to Camera?), just make sure to set the camera distance in the particle attributes. Then measure the distance between the player and the Particle Emitter (i used to use TagPoints in the past, but i doubt they are needed now). Text can simply be displayed on the screen using UI:Display:Display node with a custom text string to be displayed in the viewport. It's a simple Flash setup.
