You can control it just like I did. with caf animations. all you need to do is to have the chr , skin (with your BS (morph - blend shapes)
when you have them in engine and you can control them in the chat editor is ok. if they are distorced I little try to change the value on export (if you don't know what I mean I can explain latter)
then you can set the points with the name of your blend shape and the (name of your blendshape)_blend,,, (the rest of the name I forget) it's on the manual(docs of the engine)
then you can with the wire parameters of 3ds max link the x value postion of the point blend shape reference ro your morph on the skin file you want.
then send this point reference to your root bone (maybe biped 001 ? if is a biped there.
then export the skin and the chr again.
