Oh, that's the problem.

You'll be able to lower the particle count by at least 4-5 times if you give them stretches and trails. It's just as convincing from a distance, and in some cases may look even better.

e_particlesmaxscreenfill and e_particlesmaxdrawscreen are the two variables you'll want to increase. By that I mean, set the former to ~2000 and the latter to ~50. It makes things look much more detailed.

Soft particles not working

I'm working on creating a realistic nuke, only to realise that soft particles aren't working . Bugger! This isn't too big of a deal for the most part, but it's extremely problematic when working with the giant glow:
